Many web site owners generate income by simply selling advertising on their web site just like a newspaper sells ads in their papers. For example, you may have a website about dog breeding and so you agree or offer to put a banner advertising a company's dog food on your site and they pay you a monthly fee

Such advertising is usually in the form of banner ads but the current trend is to include google ads using their 'Adsense' program. In this situation, you sign up to the Adsense program (or similar ones by other companies) and place a piece of html code in your pages that generates ads on your web pages that are of similar nature to that of your site.. When a visitor to your site clicks on an ad link, you are paid a certain amount of money - say 50 cents. The more visitors to your site, the more often they click on the ads, the more money you earn.
Using this method, many people simply build an information and content rich site that attracts a lot of visitors, include adsense ads on their pages and reply on the interest of their visitors to click the ads and generate income... no products sold at all.
